JON LORD BEng (Hons)
Jon has gained valuable experience in structural design and analysis from working in a multi-disciplinary consultancy for over ten years. His experience includes design of structural elements in steel, concrete, timber and masonry on projects ranging from simple domestic extensions to major commercial developments. He regularly uses a variety of computer software packages as an aid to designing and detailing, including technical drawing and finite element analysis.
Jon manages projects from conception stage, creating feasible structural schematics, undertaking analysis, detailed designs and tender documentation. Subject to project requirements, Jon will also oversee works during construction.
Jon obtained an Honours Degree in Aerospace Systems Engineering from Coventry University in 2000, and following this took a year out to travel the world. Due to unforeseen circumstances in the aerospace industry, Jon pursued a career in alternative engineering fields. He accepted a position at Archibald Shaw, and undertook further education at the University of Portsmouth to gain knowledge in civil and structural engineering.
Since joining Archibald Shaw Jon has undertaken a wide variety of designs on commercial and domestic projects including housing developments, steel framed buildings, barn conversions, historic building refurbishments and highway bridge works. He has significant experience in the design and repair of reinforced concrete structures including foundations, complex slabs and retaining walls. He was Assistant to the Engineer on a three span bridge strengthening and refurbishment, and open cut tunnel project in Aberthaw, Wales. Recently, Jon was Principal Structural Engineer for a £4M SEN (special educational needs) school near Bristol.
Jon is proficient in the use of computer software packages, including AutoCAD for technical drawing, CSC S-Frame for finite element analysis of frames and slabs, CSC Fastrak Building Designer, and other proprietary design programmes.
Currently a Graduate Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. Having successfully completed Core Objectives and Professional Review stages, Jon intends to become a Chartered Member in the near future.
